The Giver 2
Jonas was pretty upset about being skipped over at the Ceremony Of Twelve. We learn that the reason for this is because his job assignment is the Receiver of Memory. What do you think this means? Why does the chief elder say that Jonas will have to endure severe physical pain? Why do you think the community makes such a big deal out of this?

I think that the Receiver of Memory is people who know what everyone is thinking at all times. Like if someone was gonna rob a bank the Receiver of Memory would know. The chief elder says that Jonas will have to endure severe physical pain because he will have to under go serious mental and physical training. I think the community makes such a big deal out of this because its one of the most important jobs they have.
I think it is where he gets the memories of the past given to him. I think the cheif elder says he will have to endure pain because some memories are painful while others are pleasant. I think the community makes such a big deal about it because they don't want to loose the memories of the past and somethings have changed and if they want to change them back they will have the memory to do so.
I think the job assighnment for Jonas means that they think he is smart. I think the chief elder says he will have to endure pain because he has to deal with the bad memories. I think the community makes a big deal out of this because it is important. The job has not been give for like 10 years.They have high expectations for Jonas.
I think that the Receiver of Memory is a person who has to remember every thing and the age people are and what jobs they have. The chief elder says that Jonas will have to go under serious pain. So he has to go through a training to become The Receiver of Mmemory. So maybe he has to go to a place where it's like a boot camp. Then he will have to train really hard to get the job.

What she means by "phyical pain" is that he going to possibly get hurt alot.Maybe do stuff like go outside the community and travel other places. Why i think they are making a big deal about this because they probaly wont see him alot or ever again. Also he might have to fight other comunities for land or money and other stuff. Another thing is that he could be planting plants or finding plants or food for the comuity or he is the one he release people from the comunity.
I think that the Receiver of Memory means something like he gets to remember whatever happens in his life. He gets to keep it forever and stay at the community forever. I think the community makes such a big deal out of it because it probably only happens every once in a while and they probably didn't expect that Jonas would get the assignment. I think that the Receiver of Memory is a very important job for Jonas. I don’t really know what it is yet but I think that Jonas will have to take a lot of work and practice to gain his wisdom for the job. One thing I noticed is that the old Receiver of Memory has pale eyes and Jonas is the only other person with pales. Then I think after Gabe comes of age and Jonas is old enough to give up the job, I think Gabe will become the Receiver of Memory. What I think about Jonas about being the Receiver of Memory and what it means is that he is probably going to restore all feelings and physical pain in this little city. It is like how we live we feel pain and we have feelings and we have choices. That is what Jonas is probably going to do to the city. The chief says that he need to endure severe pain is because no one feels it in that city and someone must to change the city. Why i think the community is making a big deal of this is because no one has ever heard of pain or suffering. Also the Receiver is head honcho and it is very, very rare for him to get that job.

What i think the reciever of memory is, is a person who has the ability to be loyal and other things the Chief Elder had said about him in the book. Why i think the Chief Elder says he will have to endure much pain is because he might have to go through a lot to do all the stuff he has to do. Like being loyal and the other stuff. Why i think the community makes such a big deal of him being the reciever is because the Chief Elder said he was selected.
the reason this is because of they skip Jonas. at the saramony of 12 and the meaning of the receiver of memorie is a very in portant. job becauce he is the receiver that is a very inportant job. The man on the cover of the book is the man that will give Jonas the training.

These memories could be strange, maybe something like a memory that the person experiencing it can feel what is going on as if they were actually there. They all have the same eyes and they can see things that other people can't. I think that he is gonna have to go through physical pain because they want to make sure he can handle the job. I think the receiver of memory is someone who gets peoples memories and gets memories from people out of there community. I think what the elders mean by he has to ender pain is that he has never felt such pain and he will have to get used to it. The community doesn’t have pain so he hasn’t ever felt it so it will be a knew thing for him. At the end of ceremony of twelve this ladies called his number and that is when he forgot his nimber and then he remebered it and standed up and went to the stage. when the ladies was calling his number he was reallly frightened because he didn't know what he was going to be because he was last. whan she said it he didn't knoe what a Receiver of Memory was so he was asking his self what the Receiver of Memory was. once he saw the old man that he never saw before so he was thinking that he was taking his spot.

I think the elder means when he says physical pain that they will have to do some kind of surgery of the mind and it might cause him to have severe headaches. The community made a big deal about it because it was a very rare thing that happened. Another reason is that they might have thought "why Jonas"? One more reason why they made a big deal about it is because they don’t want Jonas to go through that unbelievable pain.

Or he could have the most memories out of all the people, and he has to share them. I am still sort of confused on that though. I think he could also have the least important job out of all of them, but I doubt that too. I doubt it, because it is a "Selection", not a "Assignment" or "Job".

I think that because the ceremony of tweleve was a ceremony to give the kids their assignments and Jonas was not assigned but selected is WHY they skipped him. I think this means that Jonas may not have the easiest time as the reciver of memory. No one in the twon has any pain, emotion, or competition in the comunity. Someone has to keep all these things at away from the people somehow that is most likly going to be jonas job and nothing comes easy. The comunity makes a big deal out of this because there is only ONE reciver of memory and someone else before jonas was chosen so there have now been two recivers of memory.

I am responding to Tori’s comment by saying that I don’t think that’s what the receiver’s job is because in that town no one really dose anything bad. Therefore robbing a bank is highly unlikely... but that’s just a guess I mean you could be right.

i thik that the memory reciever is someone who knows what they are doing. And they do exactly what they are suppose to and dont have any troouble at all. and they know just how to take care of children and they do it right. if that is so then jonas should be the memory reciever and he also helps elderlys remember things because some people cant remember things. so jonas is right for that.

I think the Receiver of Memory is when you get a look into the future. Then you have to try and find out what it means. Like if something bad happens into the future then the Receiver of Memory will have a glimpse of the future and have to figure out what it is trying to tell him to save the town or other things. He will have to do physical work and mentally work to help the people. That’s what I think. It means that Jonas has to change his ways if he wants to b the receiver. If he becomes receiver he will have to change at least that’s what the elders said. If Jonas has to change he has to be proud. He is very mad that he got skipped but he got the best job in the whole community. Thats what I think the cheif elder meant by that. They probalby think it will fit him because they think he has the power of seeing beyond. Which i think is the most important thing he has to do.

Just like the apple that Jonas took from the park, I think that the Reciever of Memory knows about it. I think that the chief elder says that Jonas will have to endure severe physical pain because of the training he will have to under go to become the Receiver of Memory.And he will know all of the secrets that will but stress and pain onto himself. I think that the community makes such a big deal out of this because the Receviere of Memory only gets picked every once in a while, and thats why its such a big deal to people.

I think the physical pain is he will have to experiance everything of real life, good or bad, and some stuff in real life hurts REALLY badly, like getting shot, getting knifed, breaking bones. And also theres little things like sunburn, cuts, and even dying. But then theres good things to he will get to experiance. i also think they make a big deal about it in the community because without the reciever of memory, they would all have to experiance everything in the real world when the reciever of memory died.

I think that it means that Jonas has a big assingnment and that he must use his ability to see things wisely. I think that the reason why Jonas will endure servere physical pain is that because of him being the Reciver of Memory, it hurts him to get more memory into his head. I think that the community is making a huge fuss over it because no one has ever been Selected in quite some time now. I am a little confused why he was choosen for that, but I kind of understand it.
I believe that the receiver of memory is the one that can see the emotions of the real world. He can also see what the real world was like. I also think he is able to teach and help the community with feelings and the real world. Jonas must be really scared, because it seems like a frightening, dangerous job. I hope we find out what the truth of the receiver of memory is.
I think Jonas will have to endure sever physical pain to be the next Receiver of Memory because the memories will probably be from long, long ago. I think the Receiver of Memory receives memories from how 'our' world is and that might be from a long time ago, so they might have to inject him with something so his mind is relaxed to recieve the memories.
In my personal opinion the Receiver of Memory probably reveices memories from the 'old world' as we know it now. I'm guessing that person also knows about all the things the community isn't tell it's people, like what the stirrings are, more about birthmothers, and why everything is controlled so well.
The community probably makes such a big deal over The Receiver of Memory because, even if they don't know what it is, it's really rare for the Elders to pick a new one, and because it means that specific person is very special.

I also think that the pain he has to endure in mental pain and head aches and stuff. hes going to have to learn things through his mind and the old reciever of memory is going to have to teach his. It probely won't have the memories of the whole world because that would be showing the feelings of our world and people are tring to get rid of that. The giver is a really good book. When jonas got picked for the reciver of memory, it didn't really surprise me i kind of thought that was going to happen. one then that was weird is the other reciver had blue eyes. it was kind of funny when jonas got trick too. this book is ok, not the best.

Hey Mrs.Cardenas, I Miss You all so much. It seems like i have been forever. Well i have been gone forever but, i got some stuff to tell you. One thing my language art class up here is weird, we still have to take spelling test.When the teacher talked about reading another book she had mentioned the Giver, I told her that I had started it and so far it was good. I don't like my classes. I miss being with everyone downs the.
